¶ 1 · THE SEVENTY-ONE AGENCY

A council of translators. A judge. One winner.

The Seventy-One Agency is a literary translation press built on the ASI-Evolve engine. A council of AI translators drafts a chapter in parallel, each blind to the others. A judge scores every draft on five axes — fidelity, literary quality, target-language character, voice, accessibility. The winner seeds the next pass, and the next, until the work clears the bar. Seventy-One publishes books, not paragraphs.

ANY SOURCE · ANY TARGET · BOOKS, NOT PARAGRAPHS

COUNCIL · PARALLEL DRAFTS
Three or more translators draft the same chapter, blind to each other. Disagreement is the point. No single draft is the answer.
JUDGE · 5 AXES
Fidelity, literary quality, target-language character, voice, accessibility. The judge reads every draft cold. The strongest survives.
PRESS · REAL BOOKS
The winner is promoted to the sovereign corpus and published as a reader edition. Real chapters, real paths, real readers.

I. How it works

Four stages. One chapter at a time. The book lives in the manifest.

Every chapter walks the same path. The manifest is the only place a run learns about its book — source language, target language, register notes, rubric weights. No book-specific code. The council never sees the judge; the judge never sees the council's identities. Only the translation crosses the line.

01
Provision
A manifest.yaml — the book, the chapter, the source language, the target language, the register notes. No book-specific code. The manifest is the only place a run learns about its book.
02
Evolve
A council of translators drafts the chapter in parallel, each blind to the others. A judge scores every draft on five axes. The best candidate survives and seeds the next step.
03
Promote
When a draft clears the target score — or patience runs out — the best version is promoted to the sovereign corpus as a published chapter, with a status record beside it.
04
Publish
A reader edition is assembled — index, table of contents, the translated chapters. A real book, with a real path, readable in the Folio reader. Seventy-One publishes books, not paragraphs.
II. The council and the judge

One translator's first draft is never the answer.

The council drafts in parallel — each seat a different model, each blind to the others. The judge reads every draft cold: no model names, no ranking bias. Five axes, weighted per the manifest. The strongest goes back for another evolution round. Convergence stops the run early. Stagnation stops it too.

III. The five axes

The judge reads on five axes. The weights live in the manifest.

These are the production defaults — fidelity, literary quality, target-language character, voice consistency, accessibility. Every weight can be overridden per manifest. A poetry translation can weight literary quality higher; a technical manual can weight fidelity higher. The rubric is part of the book, not part of the engine.

fidelity
0.25
How faithfully the candidate renders the source — meaning preserved paragraph by paragraph, authorial voice respected, no significant omissions or additions.
literary quality
0.30
Reads as beautiful prose in the target language — rhythm, cadence, natural phrasing. Verse and quotation rendered with poetic care.
target language character
0.20
Reads as genuine native writing in the target language and register, per the manifest’s register notes. Not surface-converted source language.
voice consistency
0.15
A single translator’s sensibility throughout. No unpredictable register switches. The voice holds from the first page to the last.
accessibility
0.10
A native reader can follow and enjoy it — clear structure, engaging, readable aloud. Translation as devotion includes the reader.
IV. Any language, any book

Any source into any target. Real books, real readers.

The manifest carries the source language and the target language. The register notes — dialect, period, tone, cultural instructions — live in the manifest too, not in the code. A Quebecois French translation is not a Parisian French translation; the manifest says so, and the council and judge honor it. Here are the proof runs, and the languages the council can reach.

V. The press

Seventy-One publishes books, not paragraphs.

The name references the Septuagint — the seventy translators whose Greek version of the Hebrew scriptures was itself considered inspired. Seventy-One is the extra translation, the one that completes the pattern by breaking it. The press publishes real translated books, real chapters, real reader editions. Not a paragraph toy. Not a chatbot demo. A press. If you have a book that deserves to cross a language line, bring it to us.
